Contests and Competitions |
Accept the Challenge
Every year, more than 60,000 children from around the country enter science projects in one of the science and engineering fairs affiliated with Science Service. Six thousand middle school entrants are then nominated by their fair directors to enter their projects in the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge—the only competition of its kind for students in grades 5 through 8.
Between June (the deadline for entering) and early September, our judges choose 400 semifinalists among the entries. Students are judged on the scientific merit of their work and, just as importantly, on their ability to communicate the science of their project.

Letters About Literature |
The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores and in cooperation with affiliate state centers for the book, invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to enter Letters About Literature, a national reading-writing contest. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre-- fiction or nonfiction, contemporary or classic, explaining how that author's work changed the student's way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for children in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8, and Level III, grades 9 - 12. Winners, announced in the spring of each year, receive cash awards at the national and state levels. For information contact the LAL Project Director at lal@epix.net.

Volunteers Needed |
The Community Food Bank needs volunteers!!!! They provide food for many who are in need in Victoria County and the surrounding counties. It is a very productive facility who counts on volunteers for much of their help. As truck loads of food are brought in, each item has to be sorted and repacked to go to the places where they are needed. If you are 16 years or older, come on out and help sort food in boxes. This does require some lifting of medium weight boxes (up to 30 lbs) but most is transferred by conveyor belt.
Mondays 1:00 - 4:00 starting March 19th
Must be 16 years old or older
Community Food Bank is located at 3809 E. Rio Grande (off Del Mar Dr before Lone Tree Road)
If you can't come every Monday, please consider coming some!
